Centre for Functional Materials (CFM)

The mission of the Centre is to maximize the use of infrastructure at NUSRI in China and to promote the development of functional materials for environmental and energy use. The Centre is committed to excellence in education and scientific discovery. The CFM achieves its mission through multi-disciplinary collaborations across the faculties of science and engineering at NUS, and with external partners and research institutions in China. It pursues basic research in developing functional materials intended to address some of society’s most important problems. The Centre provides teaching and research training for young scientists, as well as resources for startups and new ventures.


Features of the Institute

In CFM, the researchers will focus on the fabrication of functional materials for environmental and energy applications. The CFM is striving to achieve breakthroughs in material sciences and technology development through interdisciplinary collaboration between chemistry, physics and material engineering.The centre also promotes fusion research across different research groups from Singapore, China and other countries in the region. In addition, further collaboration with the Suzhou Industrial Park has great potential in realizing commercialization of the functional materials developed in our center.

Research Interests

The centre is designed to solve energy and environmental related issues by using functional materials. The research work within the centre is generally classified into two parts, namely environmental materials and energy science related materials.

(1) Envuronmental Materials

– Fast detection of water pollutants

–  Recyclable materials for water purification

– The impact of functional materials on environmental system


(2) Energy Science related Material

– Nanocomposite materials for solar cell

– Graphene-based materials for lithium ion bayyery

– Pt-free catalysts for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells


(1) Theoretical Investigation and Application of Energy Cluster based Lanthanide Doped Upconversion Luminescence

(2) Multi-level anti-counterfeiting using multi-color upconversion microcrystals
